What's Next?
One of the ways I gain some insight into the future of internet marketing is to watch what google is doing, where they're committing their resources and what they're spending money on.
Typically, if Google thinks it's important then it probably is.
So I found this next email rather fortuitous…
Google to Acquire AdMob
November 2009
Today we announced that AdMob has signed a definitive agreement to be acquired by Google for $750 million. We are extremely excited about this new partnership and what it means for our advertisers.
AdMob’s people, products and tools will continue to work to deliver successful campaigns for you – no interruptions. Our product and engineering teams will keep building great products for our customers. Our business development team will keep working to maximize ad revenue for the more than 15,000 mobile Web sites and applications that make up AdMob’s publisher network.
After our deal closes, AdMob will work with Google to accelerate the pace of innovation in mobile and do an even better job for you. We believe this deal will benefit our advertisers by:
*Increasing our investment in building innovative and engaging ad units across platforms and to further improve targeting and tracking.
*Building even more powerful relevance and optimization capabilities.
*Improving the already high level of service and support we deliver to our advertisers.
You can read more about this deal at www.admob.com/google.

Why do I care?
Recently I've put a lot of work into mobile marketing. After some initial experimentation I started automating (of course). And now I have a pretty killer platform for creating complete mobile iPhone marketing campaigns for… you guessed it… AdMob.
The fact that Google just bought them means I'm significantly ahead of the curve on the next big platform for Google ads.
Once again, I rock.
Now, if you haven't messed around with mobile ads yet then this won't mean much to you (because you probably still think it's just like regular internet marketing, only smaller). But I'm really geeked about where this could go.
So now I have a question for you… Tomorrow I am (probably) going to release Image Ad Builder as part of my birthday launch celebration. After that I was going to dive more into content network tricks. Would you rather learn more about the content network… or get your hands on a preview of mobSqueeze, my new mobile campaign builder?

Hi Matt,
-Coming from the angle of "catching the next wave" my recent visit to Ad Tech London confirmed to me the huge potential of mobile marketing in Europe. Each vendor was pushing for "their" platform as the main channel of ad distribution. It reminded me of the VHS/BETA MAX race….nobody was quite sure who was going to win BUT right before my eyes I could see the future forming (and The iPhone & Android are just the beginning as advanced delivery tools)….
So Yes the Pulse you "feel" is strong BUT like many other marketers out there the recent explosion of the Google content is just too big too ignore right now. I vote for the Image ad & Content network tips!
Looking forward to seeing your presents

Personal preference:
Content Network Tricks followed by preview of mobSqueeze (only because I'm currently involved with the content network).
Can't wait to see what you've added to the Image Ad Builder..
Any word on when (if you still plan to) you will be releasing your Content/placement network tracking tool?

MobSqueeze, anything mobile…
What are you promoting on mobile though? I have been looking for offers or anything to promote and haven't really come across much. Since a majority of the devices don't use cookies what are you doing with the traffic?
Building lists?
Gabe

My heart says "Image Ad Builder" and the content network because that's what I'm working on at the moment. Anything that adds to the info in Placement Targeting Unleashed would be great.
My head says "MobSqueeze" because for once I want to get into the latest trend near the beginning rather than a year too late.
Either would be great…

Lets rape the content network for all that it's worth till there's no more to be had, then we'll move on .
I think there's to much still left on the table there to be left alone
mharward @ 4:33 pm:
@Gabe… Well, now you know what I've been working on
I ran into the same issues. And I've come up with several solutions to your problem. In my experience that's a huge issue with mobile marketing right now… all the offers and back ends are targeted at traditional platforms.
I'm still experimenting, but I've also been able to get outside the box and create some different options for affiliate marketers on mobile platforms.
One of the things I've done is totally ignore every platform but two. My mobile universe at his point consists of Apple (iPhone and iPod Touch) and Google (Android). Those 2 platforms give me everything I need right now and let me do some really cool stuff with their nearly full-featured browsers.
@Jason… I tend to agree with that. I think that's where I'm leaning as well (especially since that's where I was already headed).
I'll have more information in a post later today.
Lana @ 4:46 pm:
Happy Birthday Matt!!
I have been experimenting with the lead gen on AdMob on and off myself.
So I would love to see your mobSqueeze.
Thank you for sharing,
Lana
Greg @ 4:56 pm:
Matt,
Once again, I rock - Yep!
I'm struggling on the content network so any help tips and tricks, similar to the many previous ideas would be great.
Mobsqueeze, if its anything like the rest of the things you've done will give me a heads up so I look forward to seeing what you've done.
Happy Birthday - I'll buy you a cold one when I run into you one day

Hi Matt,
I want Content Network Tricks first. You know the holiday season is coming and I desperately want your Amazon tip as well.
And I guess Mobile ad will make a killing for next year…I think iphone users could be hyper-responsive.
Not sure which date is your birthday but I know it's happening this week.
Happy birthday!
You are the man, the mad man that I like!
Wilson
Gabe @ 5:37 pm:
Matt,
Interesting…
All the people I have been dealing with in the mobile marketing world don't get what we are trying to do with it at all. The mindset is either national brand awareness or coupons for the local auto body shop. In fact, I remember you discussing a Bluetooth app you had developed for mobile marketing at restaurants and things where you lived but you couldn't scale it.
That's where mobile is stuck right now. No one seems to know how to monetize the traffic. Other than the middlemen (AdMob's or the SMS code providers) of the world trying to figure out a way to cash in on it is tough.
I will say this though… The amount of traffic is staggering. I have never a had a single campaign I have run on AdMob, even for the less popular handsets (like the iPhone) not blow through a $50 or $100 budget in 10 or 15 minutes.
It's really incredible.
Taylor @ 6:27 pm:
I vote for the Image ad & Content network tips, and the Amazon tip for the Christmas rush would be great.
I think you will be early to the mobile market for at least another year. Max it out in 2010, and sell a Gauher size course in 2011
Happy Birthday, you totally rock!

I always like to be at the front end of a massive trend, like mobile marketing. So would love mobSqueeze. On the other hand, I need every last ounce of assistance i can get right now with the content network. So, bring on the new and improved Image Ad Builder… then how about mobSqueeze for Christmas:)? Happy 40th Matt!
Stephanie @ 9:24 am:
….. another vote in favor of content network.
Happy Birthday (or belated birthday, as the case may be)!
